Burnout is often treated like a mindset issue.
But your biology has a scoreboard.
If you don’t measure cortisol, you’re often guessing.
This week is where you stop guessing and start getting answers.
LESSON 1: Why Burnout Must Be Measured
Burnout isn’t vague. It’s measurable.
If someone has:

broken sleep
-
irritability
-
anxiety sensations
-
weight gain and cravings
-
brain fog
-
low libido
-
afternoon crashes
Then the question is not “Why am I like this?”
The question should be:
What is my cortisol rhythm doing?
What are my adrenals doing?
What are my other hormones doing?
Because once you measure, you treat with precision.
The biggest mistake people make
They assume burnout is purely emotional, and they try to:

think their way out
-
push through
-
self medicate with stimulants
-
rest without changing the drivers
But burnout recovery is a nervous system + endocrine reset.
LESSON 2: The Cortisol Rhythm
Cortisol should rise in the morning, then gradually fall throughout the day.
A healthy cortisol rhythm looks like:

Morning: strong rise (helps you wake)

Midday: stable and productive
-
Afternoon: slight fall (calm but functional)

Night: low (enables deep sleep)
LESSON 3: Why Standard Blood Tests Often Miss Burnout
This is important, because many people feel dismissed.
Blood cortisol is a single moment, not the rhythm.
And burnout is often a rhythm disorder.
Why saliva is powerful
Saliva testing:

measures free active hormone

captures cortisol at multiple times of day

shows your true stress rhythm
That’s why this program encourages people to take burnout seriously and invest in testing properly.
Not because it’s trendy.
Because it’s effective.
Examples of Saliva Cortisol results
In this example you can see how the cortisol is spiking over the day - indicating stress from work. We discussed why that was the case and came up with better coping strategies.
In this example you can see the very low cortisol in the morning. Their DHEA is also low confirming low adrenal reserve and burn out.
This person was waking feeling unfreshed by sleep so we worked on earlier bed times, supporting their energy cycles during the day and enhanced sleep patters. .
LESSON 4: The Burnout Biomarkers (What’s Worth Testing)
This is the practical “save money” piece.
Priority 1: It is best to test not guess.
1) Salivary cortisol mapping
As shown in the previous examples this may uncover rhythm disturbance and opportunities to really target recover.
My preference is to measure cortisol over 4 points across the day.
It is also imperative to do this testing on a "typical" work day. Not a super relaxed chilled day.
2) DHEA
Your vitality hormone. Low DHEA = burnout depletion.
I use DHEA as a strong indicator of adrenal reserves. If this is low, then so is the person.

Example of Saliva Sex Hormone results
This test results is from a young man in his 30s who was feeling lost, depressed, had a fatty liver and wasn't progressing despite having a doctor, dietician and counsellor.
Once we did his saliva testing we could focus on the biological issues. His low testosterone was stopping him feel happy and strong and his high estrogen was causing the depression. Once these were reversed (which took only 3 months), his life turned around.
This test result from an executive woman displays her high cortisol (causes of her belly fat and poor sleep). And her issues with heavy periods was evidenced by her low progesterone (which stabilises her uterus) and high estrogen (which often leads to a thicker uterine wall which bleeds more).
Once we had these results we were able to manage her hormones and restore her cortisol biorhythm and periods.
Priority 2: Strongly recommended (depending on age/sex)
I also think it's important to let you know that sex hormones are majorly impacted upon by cortisol levels.
Cortisol can suppress progesterone in women (think PMS, menopause flushes, depression, skin issues).
In men, cortisol may suppress testosterone production (think low sex drive, depression, low energy).
Over the past two decades I have found massive benefit in getting the full scoreboard. Sex hormones and stress hormones.

If you are burnt out, you don’t need more motivation.
You need:

hormonal rehabilitation
Because burnout recovery accelerates when you stop guessing.
